The chief librarian, Mr. Wheatley, appears to recognize him, but Norman claims he is mistaken. The assistant librarian then informs Norman that Peterson conducted private research at the house. He studied records of area disappearances and other demographic data. I had a blast with this horror classic even if it is highly evocative of other isolated scary house movies. Norman and Lucy get into the cellar, which contains several mutilated bodies (including Ann, Mrs. Gittleson, and the couple who died earlier), surgical equipment, and a slab.

The killer then stabs Gittleson to death with a fireplace poker and drags her into the cellar. That said, this is pretty average, and has its moments of humor sprinkled throughout. You’ll be left scratching your head at moments, and actually intrigued by the events going on at others. The family definitely makes questionable choices. While I wouldn’t watch this again, I’d definitely recommend watching it once. Oak Mansion is in a poor state of repair.

He opens the cellar door and walks down the stairs, only to be attacked by a bat, which will not let go until he stabs it repeatedly. Spooked, the family drives down to the real estate office and demands to be re-housed but are told it will be days before they can move. While the Boyles are at the hospital to treat Norman's injuries from the bat, Mrs. Gittleson arrives at the house to tell them of a new property. Tedious follow up to Fulci's entertaining ZOMBIE. Features the most annoying kid in the history of cinema. A woman looks for her boyfriend in an abandoned house. After discovering his body stabbed with scissors, she is killed with a French knife and dragged through a cellar door by a monstrous figure.

Freudstein is a living corpse with rotting flesh. The 150-year-old Freudstein lives by using his victims' parts to regenerate blood cells. Norman attacks the ghoul, who twists the hatchet away. Grabbing a knife from the slab, Norman stabs Freudstein, causing flesh and maggots to ooze out of the latter's old lab coat. Freudstein grabs Norman and rips open his throat. Lucy and Bob climb a ladder leading to the underside of the cracked tombstone.

Freudstein grabs Lucy and drags her down the stairs. Her head bangs on each step on the way down, killing her. As Freudstein advances up the ladder, Bob strains to escape. As Freudstein grabs Bob's leg, he is pulled upwards by Mae.

Though it’s tonally less apocalyptic than CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD and THE BEYOND, the creeping suspense and gory FX should satisfy any Fulci fan. Ann goes to the cellar looking for Bob and hears childlike sobbing. Lucy returns to find Bob crying in his room but refuses to believe his account about Ann. That evening, Bob returns to the cellar looking for Ann but gets locked in. Lucy hears Bob's cries and tries to open the cellar door.

But as Norman tries to uncover the mystery behind the murders, he uncovers an otherworldly secret that may be closer than he thinks.

10 Important Things to Consider When Building a Duck Coop

duck house ideas

For a simple DIY duck house, you can use various materials, including plywood, two-by-four lumber, vinyl flooring, and welded wire. Before you rush out and select a duck house DIY plan, you should consider some important details. With careful planning, you will end up creating a structure to suit your birds and fit into your outdoor living space.

If you prefer to supply them with an area in the house for a nest, ensure there is still enough space for all your feathered friends. Some pet owners will remove the ducks’ food and water dishes in the evening. They do not need it during this time anyhow, and if it is there, there is a good possibility they will make a mess. Ensure the coop plans have easy access to the inside to remove dishes whenever you wish and for proper cleaning. Ducks differ in their needs from backyard chickens, and it can be straightforward to create a DIY duck house with some readily available, basic materials.

In my opinion, having a robust duck tractor is a plus. Because the tractor contains their water source, this one is especially cool. I adore the paint scheme of it, not only because it’s practical. It adds a little bit of personality to your pond area. This duck home is situated near a frozen pond in Manchester, England, according to the caption of this photograph.

One of the most significant distinctions is that a duck house doesn’t need nesting boxes like a chicken coop does. A duck house just needs some litter on the ground, such as straw or wood shavings, for the ducks to nest in. Get inspired by the detailed account of adding decorative touches and essential amenities, like a pond with a handmade copper handle for easy water changes.

Make a cozy haven for wood ducks with our step-by-step guide on building a nest box. Audubon provides detailed instructions, from materials to box placement, to help you craft a safe and inviting home for these striking waterfowl. Ideal for forested wetlands and waterways, your DIY project will support the conservation of this species by offering a nesting alternative. If you have a small chicken coop that you do not use anymore, you can easily convert it for ducks. All you need to do is widen the door opening, install a small ramp, add extra ventilation, and remove any roosting bars or nesting boxes.

Alternatively, you can leave the pallets intact and use them for walls as they are. Simply stand four pallets on their sides in a box shape and nail them together. You can then nail a piece of plywood on top and add a piece of sheet metal for a roof.

You’ll also need some type of roofing material for your duck house. In addition, you’ll need a couple of hinges and a latch to make the door. You’ll also need some chicken wire to cover the windows. You should also consider the breed of ducks you plan to raise when deciding how big to build your duck house and run. For example, Pekin ducks are significantly larger than Khaki Campbells or Rouen ducks. Because Pekins are larger, they need a larger duck house.

To hold your duck house together, you’ll need nails, screws, and wood glue. You’ll also need some basic tools such as a drill, saw, and hammer. You’ll also need some other basic carpentry tools such as a screwdriver, and measuring tape. You may also need windows and hardware cloth, depending on your design.

In addition to removing dirt and debris, disinfecting the duck house regularly can help prevent the spread of harmful bacteria and viruses. Proper ventilation is also essential to control moisture buildup and prevent mold growth inside the duck house. The design of the Portable Quacker Box Duck House provides ample space for ducks, allowing them to move around freely while still being protected. However, it's crucial to consider your area's climate and weather conditions to select the most suitable material for your duck house.

Using traction strips or a mat can be a terrific addition to their entrance ramp to ensure your ducks have secure footing as they travel up and down. Again, duck feet can be wet or muddy, and you do not want them to slip and fall off the ramp as they go into the duck house. Since ducks are messy eaters and drinkers, there will be water and wet feet everywhere. Installing an inexpensive, vinyl flooring material will keep the wood from rotting due to excessive moisture. You can also use flooring tiles (or a tarp that will lie over the bottom) which you can remove for easy cleaning later.

If you’re planning to build a cozy and sturdy shelter for your feathered friends, her story can guide and inspire you through your own building adventure. Yes, ducks require nesting boxes to lay their eggs in a secure and comfortable environment. Each nesting box should be large enough for a duck to fit comfortably and be filled with straw or shavings. Providing one nesting box for every 3-4 ducks is a good guideline.

If nothing else, definitely paint the interior with exterior paint. All of these things will make it easy to simply pull out the water hose and spray it down. It was a few years ago, in the middle of winter, when I decided I wanted to bring home my first set of ducks. A friend of mine went and picked up a pair of Pekins at the local auction for me.

But if you choose to keep ducks in this as a full-time run, thirteen ducks are your limit. It’s tall enough for you to walk into and well-suited for ducks to flap their wings a bit with space to enjoy. There are two access doors to the run section of it and two doors leading to the enclosed coop portion. During the day, they need a yard and a run or the chance to free-range, plus a clean pond or pool. The coop sits on two wheels, so it’s easy to pick up and maneuver the coop wherever you need it to go.

Old pallets, barrels or even an old shed can be repurposed into a customized duck house that fits the needs of your ducks. When constructing a DIY duck house, be sure to consider proper ventilation and drainage to prevent mold growth. Adding features like a ramp or floating platform can make the duck house more functional and appealing to ducks. Upcycling materials for a DIY duck house are environmentally friendly and budget-friendly. The 4-foot cable spool Duck House is a unique and innovative option for those who want to provide their ducks with a comfortable living space.

This is an expression meaning something doesn’t have protection from predators. When caring for ducks, it’s essential to protect them. It’s also best that you make the entrance slightly wider than you would on a chicken coop.

You don’t need to install insulation in your duck house. You should make sure the duck house is properly sealed to keep wind, rain, and snow out. It’s important to note that ducks also need access to fresh water during the winter. They need to swim and dip their heads in the water, even when the weather is below freezing. You will need to find a way to prevent your duck pond or duck pool from freezing over.

More Waffle House locations close in Florida

waffle house florida

Across its more than 2,100 restaurants in 25 states, Waffle House typically sees annual revenues exceeding $1.3 billion. Beloved for its delicious, cheap food and healthy doses of complete chaos, Waffle House holds a unique place in the hearts (and stomachs) of many Americans. Waffle House's typical adherence to an open-in-rain-or-shine mantra is often one that even the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) unofficially follows as an indicator of how threatening a storm is. While all other Waffle House locations are open in Florida, many are working on a limited menu.

Storm Team 4 Weather Alert

National COSH announced its annual Dirty Dozen report during Workers' Memorial Week, which ended Saturday. A Zoom presentation Thursday featured workplace safety experts and Dirty Dozen employees who were harmed at their workplaces. Read on to discover which states have the most Waffle Houses, and see how your home state compares to others across the country.

The storm is expected to slow down after landfall, moving at only 6 to 7 mph and taking more than 24 hours to move across Florida. The song has the obligatory hurricane reference, which serves as yet another opportunity for morose self-reflection. Mar-Jac, and Onin Staffing, the company Mar-Jac officials said hired Perez, have denied any culpability in the teen's death. Perez's mother filed a wrongful death lawsuit in February, accusing the chicken processing plant and others of knowingly allowing the teen to work there and failing to protect his life by following safety procedures. The teen, an indigenous Mayan from Guatemala, was killed July 14, 2023, while sanitizing the deboning area of the plant.

The Waffle House spokesperson said that’s because of customer demand and also limited supplies due to the storm. A Waffle House spokesperson told News 6 that 40 Waffle Houses were closed at the height of Hurricane Ian, but they’ve been working to get restaurants back open quickly. This is an unofficial scale, not something FEMA actually uses to officially measure the severity of storm damage to an area, but it is a quick way to break information down. Hurricanes undergoing rapid intensification in the 24 hours before landfall have been increasingly common in recent years. If Hurricane Ian hits at its current intensity or higher, it will be the strongest storm to ever make landfall on the west coast of the Florida Peninsula on record.

"We are in the process of reopening restaurants, depending on power availability, safety and staffing, among other issues." Water can recede when strong winds on the left side of the center of the storm push water out away from shore, according to CNN meteorologist Judson Jones. Tropical-storm-force winds spread also across more than 320 miles, a distance that would reach from Washington, DC, to Cleveland, Ohio. Hurricane Charley, also a Category 4, hit the same area in 2004 and brought a max of 6 to 7 feet of storm surge.

Ask anyone who lives in one of the 25 states in the US home to the roadside breakfast mecca, and it’s likely they’ve heard of the Waffle House Index. It’s the unofficial measure thought up by a former FEMA official to evaluate how severely a storm hit an area. The chain already announced Tuesday that it had closed 11 locations in mandatory evacuation zones in south Florida. Waffle House has closed 21 of its locations in Florida that are in mandatory evacuation zones as of 11 a.m. ET Wednesday, according to Njeri Boss, the chain's vice president of public relations.

The restaurant chain’s preparedness for natural disasters, which allows its locations to stay open throughout weather crises or open shortly after, has earned it a storm distinction with FEMA. Hurricane Ian made landfall near Cayo Costa, Florida, as a catastrophic Category 4 storm, with its 150 mph winds snapping apart trees, ripping homes to shreds and tearing down power lines across the coastline. The 24-hour breakfast chain temporarily closed dozens of locations along the Gulf Coast from Bradenton to Naples, and more restaurants are expected to be affected. The storm will cause "catastrophic storm surge, winds and flooding" in the areas in its path soon, it added.

The term was coined by former FEMA administrator Craig Fugate following the Joplin tornado in May 2011. The storm, which caused over $2.8 billion in damage and 158 casualties, was not enough to close down either of the Waffle House locations in Joplin. The breakfast chain remained open throughout the storm, with a prepared limited menu that allowed it to serve food even during power outages. This could expose areas to hurricane-force winds for eight hours or more, and tropical-storm-force winds for well over 24 hours. The teen's death was just the tip of the iceberg for the Hattiesburg company, which has had eight OSHA-documented safety complaints in the last five years, including three fatalities. As Hurricane Ian is set to make landfall in Florida, more than 2,000 US flights have now been canceled Wednesday, according to the flight tracking site FlightAware.

A national occupational safety organization listed Mississippi's Mar-Jac Poultry as one of the most dangerous places in the U.S. to work, following the 2023 death of 16-year-old Duvan Perez. Waffle House has also garnered a reputation for being a hotbed of absolute insanity. "We currently have approximately 35 restaurants closed, but that number will fluctuate quite a bit," Njeri Boss, vice president of public relations at Waffle House, Inc. told PEOPLE.

Closures are a tell-tale sign of Hurricane Ian's severity, as Waffle House often provides resources to emergency officials and community members during extreme weather, typically braving threatening storms. In January 2021, the chain's food truck was handing out meals in Fultondale, Alabama after a tornado struck the city; additionally, locations were open during a winter storm in Monroe, Louisiana in February 2021, per The Weather Channel. Headquartered in Norcross, GA, Waffle House restaurants have been serving Good Food Fast® since 1955. Today the Waffle House system operates more than 1,900 restaurants in 25 states and is the world's leading server of waffles, t-bone steaks, hashbrowns, cheese 'n eggs, country ham, pork chops and grits. In fact, a measurement tool called the Waffle House Index can be used to analyze a storm’s severity and the effect it can have on communities. Its classifications of green, yellow, and red indicate how severe a storm is based on how well Waffle House can operate during it.

Hurricane Ian underwent another bout of rapid Intensification in the past 24 hours, with its top-end winds increasing by 40 mph (from 115 to 155 mph) in about 16 hours. Airports in Orlando, Miami and Tampa are seeing the greatest number of cancellations. Tampa International airport is closed, and Orlando International is closed to all but emergency flights.

Southampton Publick House

The building was designed by architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro. It sits just across the street from the Disney Hall and designed to both contrast with the Disney Hall's perforated metal exterior and respect its presence. From the early Twentieth Century through today, the world's most famous and influential architects have created amazing buildings, homes and structures in LA and Southern California. These are just a few of the most beautiful - and unusual places you can see on your personal architecture tour.

Local Perks at Shippy’s in Southampton

While all the beers served at the Publick House are still brewed on-site, rising demand has led to contract brewing too. “The winter was very slow,” allows Markowski, “but trends of the last few years have shown that even as the traditional beer industry remains stagnant, craft beer is growing. There’s a whole new broader audience for local breweries.” He notes that several of his limited-edition brews have been auctioned off for a pretty penny on eBay. “These beers have at least a five-year shelf life and, like wine, will age and change in the bottle,” explains Markowski, adding, “I get frustrated with the down-market perception of beer as compared to wine.” But beverage directors at some of the city’s finest restaurant serve Markowski’s beers like they would a wine.

At Apiary in the East Village beverage director Ron Didner likes “the artisanal aspect” of Southampton beers and considers the Double White a natural complement to the restaurant’s seasonal cuisine, like the skate served over smoked bacon and razor clam chowder and the Thai-accented squid salad, which pair well with the beer’s herbal aspects. Designed by architect Richard Meier, this complex occupies an entire hilltop just off fabled Sunset Blvd. We think it's one of the greatest outdoor spaces in Southern California, with the architecture eclipsing the collection it houses. Architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue designed it to in the style of ancient Egypt.

Markowski got acquainted with good beer at college in the ’80s, when interesting beer was hard to find. “I started drinking imports and became aware that beer could have a more complex, deeper flavor than what I was used to.” He also started hanging out with some home brewers—while working as an electrical engineer after graduation, one of his colleagues was “this English guy who homebrewed and talked about it like it was a common thing to do”—and was inspired to try it himself. Its minimalist style and linear design elements connect with the grid of Los Angeles streets which can be seen from the windows. One of Frank Lloyd Wright's most important designs, it's built of textile blocks in the style of a Mayan temple. Partly designed by John and Donald B. Parkinson, it was the last great railway station to be built and not the grandest, but it's been in so many films that we all recognize it when we see it.

Sullivan and his two brothers, along with a partner, opened the Publick House in 1996, and quickly became known for the restaurant’s craft beers, reliable dining and continuous community involvement. Sullivan has been the sole owner for more than a decade while creating his own history, and had attempted to purchase the space numerous times over the years but to no avail.Over the years Southampton Publick House has received numerous awards and honors for its craft brewing, and was named Top Brew Pub by Beer Advocate Magazine in 2003. Sullivan has increased the brand from not only Long Island and New York City, but has grown to national distribution in 2005 and it’s sold in more than a dozen states throughout the country. With this new move, Sullivan intends to increase the brewing capacity, and thus the production of various beers for further commercial distribution. The restaurant will still offer good food for a reasonable price, and the new location will continue to be a venue for community oriented special events as well. But while he may be known for his more out-there creations, he’s also wary of what he calls the “side-show aspect” of craft brewing, in which alcohol content is ever increasing and ingredients can get odd in an endless effort to ratchet things up. He gravitates towards session beers whose 4–5 percent alcohol content makes them easy to settle in with for a night of drinking.

In the early 1990s, it was expanded in what renovation architect Norman Pfeiffer called "Modernist/Beaux Arts style." In 1996 he joined forces with Don Sullivan, a gregarious restaurateur who was opening the Southampton Publick House with his brother in a historic building in the tony East End town. Sullivan had been doing back-of-house design for several Manhattan brewpubs—which were having a bit of a heyday in the early ’90s—and saw the business potential. “I have respect for Coors Light” is not the sort of statement you would expect from one of the most respected craft brewers in the country. But Phil Markowski, the soft-spoken man behind the award-winning beers at Southampton Publick House on Long Island, believes in giving credit where it’s due.

“What I enjoy most” he says, “is coming up with recipes for traditional styles, butwith my own modern twist.” The signature Southampton Double White is an amped-up version of a Belgian witbier redolent with malt, orange and coriander. His flagship brew is the copper-hued Secret Ale, a style of Belgian farmhouse–inspired Alt beer that isn’t widely available in the United States. “From the beginning we had people coming in, saying ‘I love this, how can I get it, how can I serve it in my place? Waterfront’s Barbieri was such an early supporter that before Sullivan had a distribution deal for New York City, Barbieri would drive out to the brewery in an employee’s truck to stock up on porters and ales to serve at his dark, cozy bar.

Lisa McLaughlin writes about food, drink and cultural trends for TIME magazine when she isn’t busy trying to figure out how to grow hops on her windowsill. Initially a temporary structure designed by Lloyd Wright, the nested quarter-spheres form a fitting backdrop for the caliber of artists who perform on its stage.

Built in 1960 at 7776 Torreyson Drive in West Hollywood (in the hills overlooking Studio City and just off Mulholland Drive), The Chemosphere was designed by architect John Lautner. The Chemosphere House designed by the architect John Lautner for Nouard Gootgeld. An excellent example of American Arts and Crafts style architecture, Gamble House was designed in 1908 by Charles and Henry Greene for David and Mary Gamble (Procter and Gamble). Funded by the Disney family to honor Walt Disney and designed by architect Frank Gehry, it's one of the most dramatic sights in downtown Los Angeles. Sinuous shapes in shiny metal lend themselves to interpretations ranging from blooming flower to a sailing ship, but ultimately, it's up to the viewer. What the major players can’t do is create the kind of bigbodied and eclectic beers that Markowski specializes in, which are served in the restaurant out in Southampton and poured with pride here at top restaurants like Gramercy Tavern and Craft, as well as beer geek hangouts like D.B.A. and the Blind Tiger Ale House.
