They founded the city that eventually became known as Oldtown and allied and intermarried with the invading Andals rather than resisting them, converting to the Faith of the Seven as they did so. They later permitted the building of the Starry Sept in Oldtown, which became the centre of the Faith in Westeros for a thousand years until the building of the Great Sept of Baelor in King's Landing. They also built the High Tower and helped to found the Citadel. Lord Martyn Hightower gave support to Jaehaerys Targaryen after King Meagor died.

Even after Aegon’s Landing, Oldtown remained the cultural center of Westeros in many ways. But the uptight, opportunistic Otto is more powerful than Tywin ever was. He has more influence over key Westerosi institutions, in what some call the Oldtown Triad (the Citadel, the Faith and House Hightower). And he has convinced the king that he is an honorable man — “an unwavering and loyal Hand,” as King Viserys (Paddy Considine) calls him.

The five-story tower, a short walk from the Hollywood Bowl, went up around a century ago, to spare the residents of this notoriously hilly enclave from huffing and puffing their way to their doors. It’s modeled after Italian campaniles, or freestanding bell towers, and offers an easy path skyward, with a killer view of downtown L.A. Rankin and Salim will pay Alys Rivers and Alyn of Hull, respectively. Rivers is described as a healer and resident of Harrenhal, while Alyn is a sailor in the Velaryon fleet who served in the Stepstones campaign.

They defended the city from ironborn raiders, Dornishmen, and the armies of the Kings of the Reach, House Gardener of Highgarden. Because the city was so well defended, it was brought into the realm of Highgarden by marriage rather than conquest. In the books he’s Corlys’ nephew, so there’s some tweaks going on here in the screen adaptation, and he may be a conflation of more than one character.

In Fire and Blood, Ser Otto is seen as an educated man – as well as arrogant, blunt, and domineering. As Hand, he basically ran the seven realms during the last two years of King Jaehaerys’ life and kept his position when Viserys took the throne. He and the king’s brother, Prince Daemon Targaryen, were constantly at odds. No matter where King Viserys placed his brother, Otto convinced him to force Daemon out. When Daemon was given command of the City Watch, Otto worried that the prince would become another Maegor the Cruel if he took the throne. House Hightower’s next entry in Westerosi history was a marriage between Prince Maegor Targaryen (Aegon I’s son with sister wife Visenya) and Ceryse Hightower (Lord Manfred’s daughter).

Lord Hobert Hightower is the head of House Hightower during the reign of King Viserys I Targaryen. His younger brother, Ser Otto Hightower, serves as Hand of the King to Viserys.

Later on in the war, Oldtown was sealed off during the Great Spring Sickness. During this Targaryen Civil War, George R.R. Martin killed off half the population of Westeros and, as noted previously, nearly every member of the blondest family. However, the HBO series has already tweaked parts of the book, so there’s no reason to believe that everything will go down as Martin wrote in the lore. Queen Alicent and Otto Hightower will definitely begin to see consequences of their long game, and Rhaenyra will be coming for the Iron Throne with Blood and Cheese (wait for them, oh boy) paving the way. With that said, this series has been plotted out for four seasons, and that plan could change, but it’s unlikely that we will see the entire war take place in Season 2.
However, House Hightower is a close ally of House Tyrell and has married into the house several times, and all the houses sworn to Oldtown hold their allegiance to Highgarden first and foremost. Millie Alcock and the rest of the first-generation Targaryens and Hightowers will, as far as HBO has indicated, not be returning this season in flashbacks. That doesn’t mean that we won’t see them again someday, but at least Paddy Considine does not have to jeopardize his own health for another stunning performance that the awards circuit decides to ignore. Not long after, the Faith Militant uprising starts when Maegor’s half-brother, King Aenys (Aegon I’s son with sister wife Rhaenys), marries his sister.
Before becoming bannermen to House Gardener, the Hightowers ruled as kings, taking the title King of the High Tower. Currently the family has strong family ties with other Houses in the Reach, lord Leyton second daughter Alerieing married their liege lord Mace Tyrell. In the War of the Five Kings, House Hightower were supporters along with the rest of House Tyrell's bannermen of Renly Baratheon claim to the Iron Throne over his brother Stannis. But after his death, many of the their fellow bannermen allied with House Lannister, giving their support in the Battle of the Blackwater. Despite this, House Hightower continues to be cautious in their support.
The marriage was normal to the descendants of Aegon the Conquerer but not so acceptable to the Sept and the faith. There’s a bunch of Targaryen infighting, which includes Maegor stealing the Iron Throne from his grandnephew. At this point, the house was known more for trade than battles (they held a large army).
